About Jordan Lynch

The mission of the University of Louisville Superfund Research Center (ULSRC) is to evaluate the health impacts of exposure to environmental volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Within this center, the Community Engagement Core (CEC) is focused on facilitating interactions between the ULSRC, community residents, and policy makers to develop better prevention and intervention measures. In order for these interactions to be most effective, there must be a wider understanding of the nature of VOCs: what compounds are classified as VOCs, where and how exposure may occur, and what health effects may be related to exposure. My post-doctoral research is focused on knowledge creation and dissemination as well as facilitation of bidirectional interactions between residents, industry, policy makers, and Superfund Center investigators to build all partners’ and interested parties’ capacities to collaboratively understand, reduce exposure to, and address the negative impacts of contaminants from Superfund sites and other sites impacted by VOCs. My previous research projects have examined the health outcomes related to environmental and personal pollutant exposures to heavy metals, general air pollution, and/or VOCs, and through this work, it has become clear that these exposures can have a significant impact on human health. However, the negative health outcomes related to these exposures are not always common knowledge, and the results of these studies and others can prove significant in increasing general knowledge about pollution exposure and the associated risks, but only if they are shared in publicly-accessible fashions. My scientific background and my writing skills as well as my desire to promote community education have helped to facilitate my work within the CEC. The CEC’s current framework for conveying information to the general public includes knowledge exchange sessions and advisory board meetings as well as additional forms of communication including online forums, journal clubs, and reviews of current publications related to sites of interest in Louisville. Because our community engagement efforts have been significantly impacted by the novel COVID-19 pandemic, my current work has focused on developing the CEC’s webpage and creating additional documentation to provide information on VOCs and sites of interest.  In addition to helping develop and maintain a publicly-available indexed repository for summaries and other federal and state agencies reports and studies for Superfund and other regulated sites within the Louisville area, I have worked to produce a critical assessment of these reports and studies that identifies gaps in knowledge needed to make informed decisions by other local and states agencies, impacted community members, and other stakeholders. I have also created socio-historical community documents to help stakeholders better understand the communities in which our research is being conducted.  As I move forward in my postdoctoral career, I believe that my past research experience and my desire for community education will not only benefit communities impacted by environmental exposures but will continue to advocate for clear, accessible research translation that will help facilitate prevention, mitigation, and integration to increase overall public health.
