About Jonathan Walpole

Jonathan Walpole received his B.SC. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science from Lancaster University, UK. He is currently a Full Professor in the Computer Science Department at Portland State University. He has made numerous contributions to research in the area of computer systems and networking, with notable impact in operating systems, multimedia computing and networking, computer security and scalable concurrent computing. He was an early pioneer in multimedia systems research, and in the early 1990s lead the development of one of the first adaptive Internet streaming video players. In 2013 he received the internationally recognized USENIX "Test of Time" Award for his 1998 paper on automatic adaptive detection and prevention of buffer-overflow attacks. This paper was judged to have had lasting impact in the field of computer systems security. In 2003, while at the OGI School of Science and Engineering at OHSU, he was awarded the University-wide Distinguished Faculty Award for Outstanding Research, in recognition of career-long achievements in research. He has published well over 100 papers in refereed conferences and journals. Google Scholar shows that his papers have been cited over 6000 times, and that his H-index has reached 39.
He has graduated 10 Ph.D. students and has received numerous awards for his teaching, including the Outstanding Faculty Award for Teaching from the Maseeh College of Engineering & Computer Science at Portland State University (2005), the institute-wide Distinguished Teaching Award for best teacher at Oregon Graduate Institute (1990), and several department-wide Outstanding Teacher Awards for the best teacher in the Computer Science Department at Oregon Graduate Institute (1990 and 1992). Earlier in his career he was awarded a postdoctoral Research Fellowship from the U.K. Science and Engineering Research Council (1987).
