About Jonathan Balcombe, Ph.D.

Jonathan Balcombe is Director for Animal Sentience with the Humane Society Institute for Science and Policy (HSISP), in Washington, DC. HSISP’s mission is to leverage scientific knowledge of animals towards positive change in government, industry and other sectors. Balcombe studied biology in Canada before earning a Ph.D. in Ethology (Animal Behavior) from the University of Tennessee in 1991. He has published over 50 scientific papers and three popular books on animal behavior and animal protection. He formerly served as Senior Researcher with Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, and Research Coordinator for Immersion Medical.
