About Jonathan De Souza

Jonathan De Souza's research combines music theory, cognitive science, and philosophy. His book, Music at Hand: Instruments, Bodies, and Cognition, won the 2020 Emerging Scholar Award from the Society for Music Theory. It asks how instruments affect music's sounding organization and players' experience. At Western, De Souza has also served as the director of the Music, Cognition, and the Brain Initiative, which brings together faculty members and graduate students from music theory and music education, cognitive neuroscience, audiology, and related fields.
