About Jonathan De Souza

Jonathan De Souza's research combines music theory, cognitive science, and philosophy. He is mainly interested in the interplay of musical technologies and techniques, and his work examines both classical and popular repertoire. De Souza's book, Music at Hand: Instruments, Bodies, and Cognition, asks how instruments affect music's sounding organization and players' experience. At Western, he has also served as the director of the Music, Cognition, and the Brain Initiative, which brings together faculty members and graduate students from music theory and music education, cognitive neuroscience, audiology, and related fields.
