About John F. Wirenius

The First Amendment, both Free Speech and Establishment/Free Exercise issues, are my primary focus. Along the way, I've explored the overlap of criminal law and what constitutes "conduct" as opposed to "speech" and the erosion of free speech protection in the interest of suppressing "harmful" speech. My first book, First Amendment, First Principles: Verbal Acts and Freedom of Speech (2d Ed. 2004) contains much of my writing on that subject. Most recently, the effect of religiously-motivated efforts to wield secular authority in support of ecclesial bodies has become a new focus area of my research and writing.
