About John F. Wirenius

The First Amendment, both Free Speech and Establishment/Free Exercise issues, were for many years my primary focus. Along the way, I've explored the overlap of criminal law and what constitutes "conduct" as opposed to "speech" and the erosion of free speech protection in the interest of suppressing "harmful" speech. My first book, First Amendment, First Principles: Verbal Acts and Freedom of Speech (2d Ed. 2004) contains much of my writing on that subject. Subsequently, labor and employment law, and the efforts to wield secular authority in support of ecclesial bodies have become new areas of my research.
