Watthé. Flowers and Thorns from Kiang-si (China)
(2021)
Abstract
A translation of a work by Henri Watthé, a Vincentian missionary in China. Originally published in 1921, many of the articles, arranged thematically, appeared in popular magazines supporting missions. These brief articles cover a large number of topics dealing with missionary life by this French priest. His sense of ironic humor is evident throughout as he tries to explain the details of life in China a century or more ago. Numerous photos adorn these chapters. He left China when he was mobilized during the First World War, in which he served as a translator and aide for Chinese military personnel serving during that conflict. He did not return to China.
