Trappists in China

Abstract
An English translation of a history of the foundation of the first Trappist monastery in China which began in 1883. The original plan for it came from a Vincentian bishop in China, and his confreres guided and supported the monastery in its early years. At first, the members were French monks, but fairly soon Chinese Catholics joined the monastery. The author situates his work around the life and work of the monastery, its problems with the Boxers in 1900 and how they escaped death and destruction. Several illustrations accompany the text. The author's hope was that China would be completely Christian. The book, published in 1911, could not foresee the developments of the following decades.
