Abstract
An English translation of a work (published 1928) by Maurice Collard, C.M., detailing the persons and events of the Tianjin Massacres of 1870. The victims of the massacres of European and Chinese Catholic missionaries were Daughters of Charity, Vincentians (Lazarists), and others caught up in the slaughter, including some orphans cared for by the Sisters. The results led in some way to the Boxer uprising of 1900. The author used eye-witness sources and official reports of the Church, the Chinese state, and France, since its consulate in Tianjin was a focus of the ire of the local mobs. The author's goal was the eventual recognition by the Church of the martyrdom of the victims. Illustrations have been included.
