Abstract
Book Three lays out the events of the massacre. A review of the causes involved slanders against the Sisters, accused of kidnapping children, removing eyes and hearts of patients to prepare medicines. The consul of France was unwilling to help, but was eventually killed in the riots. The riot itself had been planned in advance, and the local authorities turned their backs on the events of 21 June 1870. These involved killing, looting, and burning, fomented by criminals and minor authorities. Other victims were also involved, including some children. Sketches of the property accompany the text. The French government, acting as protector of the Catholic missions, responded aggressively, leading eventually to punishments and indemnities from the Chinese government.
