Abstract
Book Two of this account of the Tientsin Massacre of 1870 discusses the activities of the Daughters of Charity and the Vincentians (members of the Congregation of the Mission) in and around Tientsin. The first Sisters arrived in China in 1848, followed by others in 1862 who began missionary and charitable works in Tientsin at that time. Their work consisted in service of the sick and poor. The account is drawn from personal and official correspondence. -- The Vincentians preached the Gospel and staffed a parish and mission stations. Convert making was their principal goal, presented in the years immediately preceding the massacre, also drawn from personal and official correspondence.
