About John R. Cutcliffe

The College of Nursing and Health at Wright State University is proud to announce the appointment of the inaugural holder of the Bertram C. and Lovetta R. Blanke Endowed Chair for Nursing Research and the Director: Center for Nursing Research, Dr. John R. Cutcliffe.
Professor John R. Cutcliffe has a clinical background primarily in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing and an academic background that spans four countries having served in academic and research positions in the England, Northern Ireland, Canada and the United States of America. He has held two previous Endowed Chair positions in the United States, and Adjunct Professor positions in Canada, Portugal, Malta, the United Kingdom, and Ireland.
His research interests focus on hope, suicide, clinical supervision and more broadly in Psychiatric/Mental Health nursing and mental health care; he was recognized by the Federal government of Canada and cited as one of the ‘Top 20 Research Leaders of Tomorrow’ for his work on hope and suicidology. He has published extensively over 290 papers, chapters, editorials/abstracts and 11 books; his work has been translated in German, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, Dutch and Turkish. As of January 2015, he has over 3700 citations of his work, an ‘H’ Index of 33 and an ‘i10 Index’ of 75.
He has over $4,500,000 dollars of extra mural research funding as a Principal Investigator/Co-Investigator/International Consultant; and his research findings, particularly those pertaining to suicide and hope, are now found in best practice and evidence-based guidelines in many parts of the world. His international program of research includes collaborations with colleagues from Norway, Portugal, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States. He has served as the national Canadian representative to the International Association of Suicide Prevention and the Director of the International Society of Psychiatric Nurses: Education and Research division. He is an Associate Editor for the number one ranked Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing journal: International Journal of Mental Health Nursing, currently serves on the editorial board of six peer reviewed journals and many others in the past.
