Abstract
Chronic lymphocytic leukemia is the most common leukemia affecting adults in Western countries, accounting for about 30% of all leukemias. It is a clonal malignancy of mature CD5+B-lymphocytes involving the peripheral blood, bone marrow, and lymphoid organs and has a distinct immunophenotype that allows differentiation from other B-cell lymphomas. Most patients with CLL present with a lymphocytosis at diagnosis; however, some patients present with lymphadenopathy alone. CLL is predominantly a disease of the elderly as the median age at diagnosis is 72 years. The clinical course of CLL is quite variable, with survival times from initial diagnosis ranging from 2 to 20 years.
