About John Gathegi

Dr. John N. Gathegi is professor in the School of Information at the University of South Florida. Originally from Nairobi, Kenya, Dr. Gathegi received his B.A. in Psychology from the U.S. International University in Nairobi, his M.A. in Political Science, Ph.D. in Information Studies, and his J.D. from the Berkeley School of Law at the University of California, Berkeley.

Dr. Gathegi started at USF in 2007 as the Director of the School of Information, before returning to the classroom. In the School of Information, he has taught a number of courses, including Copyright for Information Professionals, Introduction to Information Law and Policy, Business/Legal Information Sources, Internet Governance, Principles of Information Security, Information Policy and Ethics, and Research Methods. Dr. Gathegi was also a courtesy professor in the School of Mass Communications, where he taught Media Law and the First Amendment.

Dr. Gathegi has previously been a professor in the College of Information at Florida State University and an adjunct professor at numerous universities in California. He has accumulated administrative experience from USF and Merritt College in Oakland, California, where he held various Dean of Instruction positions. He also practiced law in California for four years.

Dr. Gathegi’s main area of research is intellectual property issues in information technology. His work has been published in various venues, such as the International Journal of Management and Decision Making, Journal of Education in Library and Information Science, International Review of Information Ethics, Government Information Quarterly and Library Quarterly. Dr. Gathegi has also published multiple books and book chapters.
