About John L. Beltramo

John Luciano Beltramo was hired as a lecturer in the MATTC program and the director of Excellence in Catholic Education and Leadership (ExCEL) and Catholic Master of Arts in Teaching (CatMAT), programs that prepare and develop Catholic school teachers in the Diocese of San Jose and Monterey. John’s connections to Catholic schooling run deep: John is a product of Catholic TK-12 schools in Fresno, California; he received his pedagogical training through Response-Ability, a Catholic teacher preparation program; and he worked as a middle school teacher and assistant principal at Nativity Catholic School in South Los Angeles from 2003 to 2011. Additionally, John has conducted studies in Catholic school leadership, publishing this research in journals such as the Journal of Catholic Education and the Journal of School Leadership.

John is excited to continue working under a Jesuit mission dedicated to social justice and educational equity. As a graduate student, John earned two master’s degrees from Loyola Marymount University, and he recently served as an assistant professor of education at Regis University in Denver. John is inspired by the Ignatian vision of equitable education and hopes in turn to inspire future and current teachers to work for justice in their classrooms each day.

John also looks forward to continuing his work in research through collaboration with his new colleagues at Santa Clara. In addition to Catholic education, John’s areas of inquiry examine how teachers learn about their students and become more responsive, adaptive classroom instructors.  John also explores questions around the learning and development of teacher educators dedicated to the preparation of equity-oriented teachers.  This research has appeared in various peer-reviewed publications, such as Urban EducationTeaching and Teacher Education, and Teachers College Record.

John holds a Ph.D. in Urban Education Policy from the University of Southern California. He teaches courses for the ExCEL and CatMAT programs.
