About Johanna Weststar

I am an Associate Professor in the DAN Department of Management and Organizational Studies. My expertise is in labour and employment relations. I am an Adjunct Professor in the I/O Psychology Area at Western where I supervise graduate students. I am also an Affiliate to the Department of Gender, Sexuality and Women's Studies at Western. Right now I primarily study the video game industry within the broader context of the project-based creative and cultural industries. I like to research everything about the workers who make video games - their working conditions, their occupational identity, their engagement in individual and collective action to improve their jobs, the representation of women in the industry...and more! But I am also working on a number of other things - see my lab page for current projects from me and my students.

In addition I have written about labour representation on pension boards and co-edited a research volume called Contradictions of Pension Fund Capitalism. I have also published on the topics of underemployment, workplace learning, job control, industrial relations climate and the role of labour relations officers and pregnancy leave.

I am a Past President of the Canadian Industrial Relations Association (CIRA), a member of the International Labour and Employment Relations Association (ILERA) Executive Committee and the Acting President of the Editorial Committee of the Canadian employment relations journal Relations Industrielles/Industrial Relations. I am also a member of the Interuniversity Research Centre on Globalization and Work (CRIMT).

In addition to the academic papers provided here, numerous open access reports about work life and work experiences in the digital game industry can be found at my website GameQoL and at the International Game Developers' Association.
