Yugoslav Migration Process and Employment in Western Europe: A Historical Perspective
Migrants in Europe: The Role of Family, Labor and Politics (1987)

Abstract
Movement of peoples, whether on the part of individuals, families, larger kin units or whole ethnic groups, has long been a creative process in social history. It is not possible to understand the significance of postwar movement of Yugoslavs to Western Europe without first understanding the cultural baggage they carry. All people are influenced by their traditions, but among the groups such as the Yugoslavs, past values, perceptions, and cyclical time perspectives tied to a still viable oral tradition constantly influence current behavior and future plans. This perspective forms the basic point of departure for this chapter.
