If it were necessary to sum up the theme of this monograph in a sentence it would be to say that we are taking a look at the way of life of a people, a national tradition on the village level, by viewing processes of cultural evolution from the perspective of century and a half of nationhood, conscious of the interaction of local and national institutions but focusing primarily on the level of the individual life, the kin group, and the ways of gaining a living, and exploring changes which have occurred in order to better understand the situation as it is now and to anticipate at least partially what may be. While this book touches on some of the same points of (A Serbian Village) this book represents a further rethinking of the accumulated data, using different illustrative materials.
