Piracy in the contemporary scenario has grown significantly and represents a nuisance for maritime negotiation, for government stability, for the environment and the crew’s physic and psychological integrity. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to analyze the international context of such events under the scope of maritime safety and the carrier’s responsibility, establishing a discussion based on the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and the Brussels Convention on the possibility of prevention and repression. Through a qualitative research, some changes and innovations on the classic understanding of piracy were discussed in order to fight, in a more efficient manner, such criminal act.
