In an undeniable win for proponents of the right to die with dignity, the Supreme Court of Canada declared Friday that the criminal prohibition on assisting suicide is unconstitutional.

The decision is undoubtedly historic; those in favour of the decriminalization or legalization of providing assistance in dying will be singing the court’s praises for weeks and months to come. But the victory may be short-lived; in some sense, the court doesn’t get the last word.
