About Joanna Dunlap

I’m an associate professor of instructional design and technology at the University of Colorado Denver. I am also a Faculty Fellow for Teaching, working through the Center for Faculty Development to help online and on-campus faculty enhance their teaching practice. My teaching and research interests focus on the use of sociocultural approaches to enhance students’ development and experience in postsecondary settings. Recently, my work in this area has revolved around online teaching and learning in higher education, specifically looking at social presence, student engagement and retention, and the use of social media and networking tools to support learning. For over 15 years, I’ve directed, designed, delivered and facilitated distance and eLearning educational opportunities for a variety of audiences. I am the coordinator of an online graduate program designed to prepare students as eLearning designers and specialists. In 2002, I received the university’s Teacher of the Year award, and have received other awards for teaching, research, and service — including Pearson’s Excellence in Teaching Award in 2010. I was also recognized for my online education work with the CU Online Innovation Award in 2013. I am married and have two fantastic daughters — Gillian (11) and Raeghan (8).

I have a doctorate in Educational Administration, Leadership, and Supervision (emphasis Instructional Design and Technology). I also have an MBA. Before joining the faculty at the University of Colorado Denver I was the Director of Distance Learning at Regis University. I have been a professor at the University of Colorado since 2000, and teaching at the university level for over 20 years. I have been teaching online for over 13 years now. I haven’t always been an academic: I produced and directed pledge drives for public television, I was a publicist, I was a project manager at Broderbund Software during the dawn of personal computers, among other adventures.
