Abstract
The establishment and management of a safe and healthy working environment is a
key joint responsibility of employers and workers. Higher education institutions are
generally large and complex organisations and workplaces that are subject to a myriad
of Commonwealth and State or Territory laws and regulations that govern workplace
health and safety. They, of necessity, have specialist divisions that oversee health and
safety matters and risk management. This chapter provides an overview of some of the
key provisions of the recently enacted model Work Health and Safety Act as it pertains
to universities. It is beyond the scope of this chapter to cover all related health and safety
legislation, but it is necessary for those responsible for the management of health and
safety in a higher education institution to be familiar with such legislation as it forms
the corpus of health and safety law.
