About Jeffrey Kerr-Ritchie

Jeffrey R. Kerr-Ritchie was born in London, England. He obtained his undergraduate degree in history and politics from Kingston Polytechnic in England and his doctorate in history from the University of Pennsylvania. He obtained fellowships from Fulbright-Hays, the Gilder-Lehrman Center at Yale University, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, the National Humanities Center in North Carolina, and Howard University. He previously taught at Penn, Wesleyan, Colombia, SUNY Binghamton, and UNC Greensboro before coming to Howard University in 2006. Dr. Kerr-Ritchie’s teaching fields include slavery, emancipation, comparative methodology, and the African Diaspora. He has supervised a baker’s dozen of undergraduate honors theses and served on several Ph.D. and M.A. committees. He is currently overseeing two doctoral candidates and sits on two doctoral committees.
