About Jun-Ki Choi

Professor Jun-Ki Choi is working in the Department of Mechanical Engineering/ Renewable and Clean Energy (RCL) Program at the University of Dayton located in Ohio, United States. He is an Assistant Director in the University of Dayton’s Industrial Assessment Center (IAC) funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. UD-IAC received the Center for Excellence award by the U.S. Department of Energy in 2015.

Since joining the University of Dayton in 2012, Professor Choi has made strong contributions to research and teaching. He developed a research program in the area of sustainable manufacturing, energy and resource efficiency, design for environment, life cycle assessment, and economic input-output analysis. Recently, he has been invited to numerous workshops and meetings hosted by National Science Foundation (NSF), Ohio Manufacturing Association (OMA), and National Institute of Standard and Technology (NIST) to present his research work. He also co-lead the University of Dayton’s Solar Thermal Adsorption Refrigeration (STAR) team who won three awards from the National P3 (People,
Planet, Prosperity) Competition hosted by the U.S.A Science and Engineering Expo and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 2016.

Dr. Choi received a 2017 Vision Award for Innovation from the University of Dayton for developing a new course in which he successfully implemented a project-based learning model built on the life-cycle design and sustainable business challenges of industrial partners (http://online.fliphtml5.com/zyet/swsb/#p=38). The collaboration brought values to all parties – the
students, Industry, and the University. Students had opportunities to work with the industrial collaborator to obtain real industrial-based training and guidance on product/process development and environmental impact assessments. Such industrial experience was valuable for student’s future career development.

Before he joined the University of Dayton, Dr. Choi was a scientific staff at the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) and performed projects with the U.S. Department of Energy and global renewable energy industries. He has been serving as a member of International Energy Agency (IEA)’s Technical Committee for Photovoltaic (PV) Task 12 which addresses the environmental impacts of PV technologies. At the BNL, he was the first researcher in the Sustainable Technology Division to receive the Goldhaber Distinguished Fellowship. He received an award from U.S. Department of Energy’s Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) program for his novel research work for developing a framework to integrate macro-economic analysis tool with life cycle assessment. Dr. Choi received his master’s, and Ph.D. degrees from Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan and
Purdue University respectively. He worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the Center for Resilience at the Ohio State University. He has been serving as a co-editor of the Proceedings of International Society of Sustainable Systems and Technology (ISSST) since 2013. He has published more than 70 peer reviewed journal papers and conference proceedings.
