Abstract
Embrittlement of Ti alloy due to surface contact with solid silver metal was reported. Tensile failure of Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo alloy in contact with silver was investigated at 450oC and 500oC in this study. Experiments were designed and performed to obtain lifetime/stress/temperature curves for Ti-6-2-4-2 alloy. The transverse and the longitudinal rolling directions of Ti alloy were compared. High purity silver was pressed against the Ti specimen using two steel plates clamped with two bolts. Effect of the torque applied on two bolts on failure time was studied. Intergranular grain boundary decohesion was observed next to the silver contact side on the fracture surface, indicating brittle failure of the Ti-6-2-4-2 alloy. Microvoids observed in the area away from silver contact side on the fracture surface indicate ductile failure of the alloy. Silver was found on the facture surface of specimen after failure using energy dispersive X-ray (EDX).
