Reflections - Mary Barra
IEEE Engineering Management Review (2017)
  • Jim Gover, Kettering University
Abstract
This engineering-style essay is about Mary Barra, Chairman & CEO of the General Motors Company. Most of the many articles and books about Mary Barra emphasize her gender and how she broke through the glass ceiling for women at General Motors; I emphasize that she is an electrical engineer who mastered the many management disciplines. My hope is that Mary Barra's career can inspire more intelligent, dedicated American youth to study electrical engineering as their under-graduate major and have successful careers in management. Most of the data reported in this essay were taken from, Laura Colby's "ROAD to POWER: How GM's Mary Barra Shattered the Glass Ceiling", Wiley Bloomberg Press, 2015.
