Abstract
A physically active lifestyle cannot be simply explained by only a few variables. A model suggested by Stodden et al. (2008) explained the role of fundamental motor skill (FMS) in promoting physical activity and preventing obesity. This model was a first-of-its- kind conceptual model that addresses FMS and perceived motor competence to explain physical activity and obesity across different age groups. This model provides important implications for physical education and motor behavior fields. However, several important concepts were overlooked in this model especially skill instruction and practice environments that effectively lead to successful skill learning. Thus, this article attempted to offer different views on the relationship between FMS and physical activity along with related variables using dynamic systems theory (Thelen & Smith, 1994). Individual-, task-, and environment-related variables are suggested to highlight the importance of improving quality of instruction and learning climate that are appropriate for individual learners’ characteristics. This article suggests the need for a holistic model that can bridge physical education and motor behavior in explaining the relationship between FMS and physical activity.
