Description

The transition to motherhood can be stressful, with 10 to 16 percent of pregnant women and new mothers developing peripartum depression (PPD). This session will examine the risk and protective factors associated with the development of PPD. Research on the relationship between breastfeeding and PPD will be explored, as breastfeeding may reduce depressive symptomology. Best practices for clinicians working with women who have PPD will be discussed, including partnering with primary-care providers and lactation consultants.
