About Jessica Den Houter

Den Houter joined the Bronfein Family Law Clinic in 2020. Prior to joining the UBalt faculty, she worked at Disability Rights D.C., the protection and advocacy system for Washington, D.C. There, Den Houter advocated and litigated on behalf of children and adults with mental illness and developmental disabilities.

Upon graduation from law school, Den Houter completed a litigation fellowship with the DC Affordable Law Firm (DCALF), a unique partnership among Georgetown University Law Center, DLA Piper, and Arent Fox, which focuses on increasing access to civil justice for low- to moderate-income D.C. residents. While at DCALF, she worked on both family law and immigration cases, including supporting clients through the asylum process, from application to the interview.

In her family law practice, Den Houter litigated multi-day trials and took and defended depositions. In 2017, she received first place in the Crane Disability and the Law Writing Competition for her article, Making State Vocational Rehabilitation Agencies Work for Transition-Age Youth with Disabilities.

She received an LL.M. in Civil Justice and a J.D. from the Georgetown University Law Center where she received the Joyce Chiang Memorial Award for her commitment to public service, as well as Exceptional Pro Bono recognition for providing over 175 hours of pro bono services to individuals and organizations in D.C. Den Houter also received an M.S.W. from the University of Michigan and a B.S. in Human Development and Psychological Services from Northwestern University.
