Abstract
Attending the OpenEd conference is powerful experience. Meeting leaders, connecting with colleagues from near and far, hearing stories about the amazing work being done to make course materials affordable and accessible- attendees leave feeling energized and empowered to keep changing the world. Wouldn’t it be amazing if everyone interested in OER could attend? Several years in a row, OER leaders from the Northeast met up at the annual OpenEd conference and laughed about the fact that we needed to fly away from home to work with our neighbors. Shouldn’t we really meet up a little sooner, and closer to home, to continue the momentum that comes from spending a few days with people who share a passion for Open Education? We decided it was time to do both. We could create a smaller OER regional conference where we collaborate with our local OER leaders and bring a little of the Open Ed energy back home. Before we left Open Ed 16, a group of OER leaders from the Northeast met to begin planning an event for summer 2017 where we could accomplish this exciting task. A few months later, a small core team and a larger planning committee was formed- and planning for the Northeast OER Summit was in full swing. In June 2017, the two day Northeast OER Summit brought more than 260 people from all over the country to University of Massachusetts Amherst campus. Those brand new to OER learned from and shared ideas with experienced OER leaders and national experts. The event was so successful that the second annual conference was promised before the end of the first. The Northeast Regional OER Conference core planning team will share the benefits of working together, regional collaboration and strengthening our effectiveness by growing our OER community.
