This paper is written at the preliminary stage of work on a project which will examine the Mayer Key Competencies in relation to Arts Education in Australia. At this stage no data have been gathered, so the paper is just a reaction to some of the literature in the area, in particular the claim by the Mayer Committee that the Key Competencies will `fuse general education with vocational training' .
