About Dr. Jennifer Westerman

Dr. Jennifer Westerman, professor of sustainable development and chair of the department of sustainable development, has research and teaching interests in environmental literature and cultural studies; class-based dimensions of environmental and social justice; and labor environmentalism. Westerman is co-editor of  Working on Earth: Class and Environmental Justice, a collection of essays that examine relationships between environmental injustice and exploitation of workers and the land. Why do poor workers face environmental injustices, and what systems, institutions, policies, and attitudes have enabled the disparate impact of environmental hazards on poor and marginalized communities? Westerman also has expertise in environmental humanities, including Appalachian environmental literary studies and environmental literary criticism.
