Abstract

The learning environment for secondary and post-secondary education traditionally has been structured to be competitive. As such, individuals entering post-secondary education and the industrial workforce are often highly competitive, but lack the ability or motivation to work collaboratively and/or cooperatively with others. Few educators have actively explored the inclusion of collaborative and cooperative components in the educational experience. In this paper we discuss how we utilized an online learning management system to support competition, collaboration, and cooperation in a university freshman-level programming course, and note the successes and failures of this venture.
