Professor
Dr. Jennifer Flory has been Director of Choral Activities at Georgia College in Milledgeville since August 2005. She serves as Professor of Music, conducts the University Chorus and the auditioned Max Noah Singers, and teaches choral and vocal music education and conducting courses. Flory made her Carnegie Hall debut with two world premieres in May 2018. She is also busy as guest conductor for events such as the GMEA 2018 Elementary School Glynn County Honor Chorus in January 2018, the Denison University (OH) Chamber Singers in November 2016, the GMEA District 11 Women’s Honor Choir in February 2015, the Newton County (GA) Fifth Grade Honors Choir in March 2012, and the GMEA District 11 High School Mixed Honor Choir in January 2008. Flory also serves as an adjudicator for GMEA LGPE, GMEA Solo & Ensemble, and GHSA Literary. She also performs as a mezzo-soprano soloist. Since August 2006, Flory has served as Director of Music at First Presbyterian Church in Milledgeville.
In April 2018, Flory was awarded the Council of Public Liberal Arts College's Charles Dunn Award, which recognizes a faculty member whose commitment to student success goes "above and beyond" the classroom and office, the traditional roles of teacher, academic advisor, and mentor. Flory was also selected as a Governor’s Teaching Fellow for the 2014 Summer Symposium Program after a highly competitive application and selection process. In spring 2014, Flory was initiated into Omicron Delta Kappa, the National Leadership Honor Society. Flory holds both a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Music Education Degrees from Otterbein College (now University); and both a Master of Music and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Choral Conducting from the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati.
Flory has commissioned a number of new choral works from composers such as Emma Lou Diemer, David Hamilton, David Johnson, and John Hennecken, and premiered them with Georgia College ensembles. Flory’s most recent articles are about the music of prolific New Zealand composer, David Hamilton, and are featured in the Research Memorandum Series, a Journal of The American Choral Foundation, published by Chorus America. Flory was also compiler for the Spring 2008 and 2009 issues of RMS; the first article details the choral-orchestral music and the latter article indexes the choral music of Emma Lou Diemer. Flory has presented technology sessions for the Georgia Music Educators Association (GMEA) and the North Carolina Music Educators Association and other sessions for GMEA on topics such as sight-reading, choral concert programming, contemporary a cappella singing, and contemporary commercial music voice pedagogy.
