Why Did Lincoln Choose War?
North & South (2001)
  • JEFFREY ROGERS HUMMEL, San Jose State University
Abstract

Examines the reasons why President Abraham Lincoln decided to launch the Civil War to preserve the United States. Rather than abolish slavery, his primary goal was to preserve the Union, a position actually in opposition to the right of self-determination outlined in the Declaration of Independence.
