About Jeffrey Carpenter

While maintaining an active practice of clinical vascular surgery, I am committed to the training of surgical residents and to both clinical and laboratory research. My earliest research led to the development of magnetic resonance angiography, which has become a standard vascular imaging technique throughout the world. My later work with allograft bypass immunology has been seminal in contributing to our knowledge of the basic science of allograft bypass graft-host relationships and their implications for use in peripheral bypass surgery. My basic science interests have always had a translational trajectory directly to the bedside and most recently have been centered around the promise of regenerative medicine. I have been an inventor and developer of devices for peripheral vascular interventions for many years, with 10 US patents, and have successfully taken my own and many other companies’ devices from concept through prototyping and bench testing to preclinical testing, regulatory approval and commercialization. I firmly believe that while devices have chiefly been used as implantable or temporary solutions to clinical problems, their most promising future applications will be as the means of delivering cellular therapies, which provide a permanent and self-renewing treatment of disease states. Devices will be the means of delivery of the cure rather than the cure itself. Our laboratory actively investigates applications of regenerative medicine therapies to surgical diseases and problems.
