About Jeffery A. Jones

Biography, Disciplines and Teaching Interests
Dr. Jones holds a M.A. from Appalachian State University and a Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky.

Dr. Jones has been working in public health research for over 20 years with more than 30 research grants totaling more than $6 million in funding.  His research has focused on using data science to enhance population health through collecting, analyzing, and visualizing health data.  For example, while working at the University of Kentucky he collected and analyzed the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance Survey on adolescent health for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Kentucky Department for Public Health, and the Kentucky Department of Education.  While working in adolescent and school health, Dr. Jones has worked with hundreds of Kentucky schools to improve students’ and employees’ health.  Dr. Jones’ research also focuses on LGBT and sexual health with multiple studies on HPV vaccination, comprehensive adult vaccinations among LGBT populations, and HIV care among Kentuckians of all sexual orientations.   More recently Dr. Jones’ work as looked at pedestrian fatalities, visualizations of Georgia pediatric Medicaid data, enhancing rural Georgia hospitals’ financial stability, and beach water quality.  Throughout his work and teaching in the areas of Health Informatics, Spatial Analysis, and Healthcare Analytics, Dr. Jones emphasizes the use of data science to improve lives.
