AbstractThe art galleries at St. Norbert College will host the exhibition "PlantBot Genetics: Mothology" Aug. 31-Sept. 25, with an artists' talk followed by a public reception on Sept. 18, from 4-6:30 p.m. The exhibition features the work of nationally recognized interdisciplinary artists Wendy DesChene and Jeff Schmuki, who were at St. Norbert College this past June for The Moth Project artist residency. It includes the artists' popular PlantBot sculptures and an engaging overview of second-shift pollinators, such as the moth, including images of moths taken in the Green Bay area during the June residency. The exhibit highlights inspired responses to the decline of the honeybee and the hope that moths and PlantBots will step in and save the day. The Moth Project combines art, sustainability, and entomological and horticultural research. It uses performance, sculpture and community data-gathering to speak about ecology in general and the importance of pollinators in particular. The exhibit is funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), which awarded a grant of $10,000 to St. Norbert College to support its Greening the Bay artist residency. Through its grants to thousands of nonprofit organizations each year, the NEA promotes opportunities for people in communities across America to experience the arts and exercise their creativity.
