Drafting legal documents in plain English : guida pratica alla redazione di documenti legali in inglese
(2013)
  • Jean Steadman, Charleston School of Law
Abstract
The general principles governing the drafting of documents in legal English are reviewed, highlighting the differences between 'vague' and 'ambiguous' language and between interpretative laws, standards and principles. The chapters analyze the structure and terminology of the various types of documents, such as formal correspondence, e-mail and contracts. The volume deals with and explains the differences between interpretative, explanatory and persuasive documents, highlighting the possible differences in terminology between British and American legal English. The concept of legal contract in English is progressively illustrated starting from its definition through an overview of the contexts that require the drafting, defining the most correct form and always drawing on examples and real cases. Finally, there is a critical analysis of the legal lexicon and a practical glossary.
