About Jean Guillaume

Jean A. Guillaume, Ph.D. is a Lecturer of Mathematics in the College of Art and Sciences at Sacred Heart University. Jean is proficient in research and statistics. His research interests pertain to discrete mathematics with a concentration in structural and extremal graph theory. His dissertation, Closure under the Majorization Relation and the Distinguishing Chromatic Number of Circulant Graphs addresses two problems in graph theory and advances results for invariants of graphs.
Professor Guillaume's classrooms are spaces where students’ perspectives are welcome, where critical thinking, problem-solving, and the practice of metacognition are cultivated, and where self-directed learning takes place. He enjoys working one-on-one with students and introducing them to undergraduate research. As a mathematician, his research lies mainly in extremal graph theory. He is heavily involved in several math learning communities such as AMS, Northeast Combinatorics, and NE-IBLM (catch his blog there), and he presents at many math conferences each year. To him, math is more than a source of enlightenment; it also provides opportunities to become a successful learner and a global citizen. As his college mentor, Dr. John Velling, once said, “Mathematics knows no skin color. The real numbers don’t care if you are purple, and the symmetries of the 3-sphere would be the same if you’re plaid.”
