Abstract
This report analyzes the industries that, at the national level, receive the bulk of the contracts issued by the U.S. Department of Defense. Manufacturing industries that serve defense contracts are found throughout the nation, in both large urban and small non-urban counties. The locations of service industries that contract with the Department of Defense tend to follow the general population distribution and coincide with major metropolitan areas. By considering local industry size (total employment) together with dependency (fraction of local employment), specific counties and metropolitan regions are identified that may rely on the Department of Defense as a customer for a major portion of their economic livelihoods.
