The most recent studies on the application of sol-gel derived inorganic matrix in controlled release of therapeutic agents are reviewed. So far, silica xerogels, materials with disordered pore structure have been used as drug carriers in a majority of works in this field. The effect od synthesis parameters on activity and release of drugs encapsulated in ordered mesoporous silica matrix are also discussed. However, only reports from in vitro drug release studies are available and infromation concerning in vivo testing are scarce. The sol-gel method and related new materials synthesis approaches are expected to create innovations in various biomedical and pharmaceutical applications, including drug delivery systems.
