The Upper Peninsula of Michigan is rich in valuable minerals—iron, copper, gold, nickel. This essay tells of the beginning of one of the most prominent iron ore mining companies on the Marquette Iron Range, Cliffs Natural Resources, based in Cleveland, Ohio, more well known in the area by its old name of Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company. Among the founders of the company were the Mather family, prominent philanthropists of Cleveland. This essay tells of a little known incident that occurred in 1869 that changed the life of Samuel Mather, who later became the richest man in Ohio.
