What's love got to do with it? Could it lead us to the "Great Colleagues" triangle?
Presentations of the Provost (2010)
  • Jamie Comstock, Butler University

I used this presentation to close a two day Provost Advisory Council (PAC) off-campus retreat and to inspire strong collegial relationships among this important work group, which I chair. As part of the retreat activities, each PAC member delivered an “Expert Moment” presentation that was to highlight their discipline-related expertise in a way that would be relevant to the group. Generally, my discipline scholarship focused on predicaments in personal and professional relationships. So, in keeping with my recent focus on collegiality on campus, I drew upon literature about close personal relationships to set up an active discussion about what I believe are important characteristic of the most effective working relationships. This approach offered a fun twist to a serious topic and concluded our retreat in a way that left us laughing but also thinking about our work associations as “relationships” with mutual obligations to one another.
