About James E Crimmins

My research and writing in the history of modern political thought includes several
books and many articles on Jeremy Bentham and utilitarianism, the most recent being
Utilitarian Philosophy and Politics: Bentham’s Later Years (2011; rept. 2013) and The Encyclopedia of Utilitarianism (2013). Currently, I am examining the dissemination and impact of utilitarian ideas in nineteenth century America. This project has received support from
the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, and Fulbright Canada.
I have been Professor of Political Theory at Huron University College, a part of Western
University in Canada, since 1987. Born in Cardiff in the UK, I graduated B.A. and M.A.
from Swansea University in Wales, and Ph.D from Western University.
In 2013-14, I was Fulbright Research Chair in the Department of Philosophy, Vanderbilt
University, Nashville, Tennessee, USA. In 1994-99, I was Dean of arts and Social Science at Huron University College. Previously I held visiting fellowships in the Institute for the Humanities at the University of Manitoba; the International Society for Eighteenth–Century Studies at the Istituto Italiano per gli Studi Filosofici, Naples, Italy; and American Society for Eighteenth–Century Studies at McMaster University.
