This paper reports the preliminary studies of a process for the microwave initiated free radical catalyzed bulk polymerization of styrene using Azobisisobutyronitrile as the initiator. It is possible to polymerize styrene using microwave radiation in the presence of a suitable microwave interacting initiator. AIBN has been found to be a microwave absorbing initiator. The percent conversion increases as the power of the radiation increases. The percent conversion increases as a function of the initiator concentration. The molecular weight decreases as the power of the microwave radiation increases for the same concentration of the initiator. Initiator concentration has an inverse effect on the molecular weight. The comparison of microwave and thermal processes showed that the percent conversions and the molecular weights were comparable.
