Abstract

In his recent study of the Grande Troménie at Locronan, Daniel Melia presented his view that this pardon, or religious festival, constitutes a modern day counterpart to the ancient Celtic Lughnasa celebration.1 In this paper I will be examining the cantiques, or religious songs, which are sung at four other pardons in Brittany with regard to their function within the pardons specifically and their relation to Breton culture generally.
