Abstract

Excerpt

As Professor Fleuriot states in his preface, "Le problème des origines de la Bretagne armoricaine est longtemps resté l'un des plus compliqués dans l'histoire de la fin de l'Antiquité et du haut Moyen Age." In this volume Fleuriot attacks this problem from a variety of angles, using historical, archaeological, linguistic, and literary data to trace the development of Celtic-speaking Brittany from Roman times to the eighth century. Fleuriot also indicates in the preface that he is following on the path of several eminent Celticists who have dealt with the settlement of Brittany during the past one hundred years, including J. Loth (L'émigration bretonne en Armorique), A. de la Broderie (Histoire de Bretagne), P.-R. Giot (Armoricains et Bretons) and N. K. Chadwick (Early Brittany).
