Abstract
The history of Dark Hollow, an African American community in North Little Rock, is a story of Black striving from the early twentieth century to the present. In this version of Dark Hollow’s history, the voices of residents and descendants are coupled with extant records to tell the origin and development of a neighborhood in proximity to other predominantly Black working-class communities like Dixie Addition, Military Heights, Rose City, and Tie Plant. The oral histories documented from 2007 to 2009 partly tell of the social, economic, and environmental transitions, and sometimes stagnation, of this neighborhood north of the Arkansas River. Ultimately, this article describes a multi-layered story of people who created their brand of freedom amidst harsh circumstances over a century.
