Abstract
Jovan Scott Lewis's Violent Utopia: Dispossession and Black Restoration in Tulsa offers a fresh and nuanced perspective on the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre and its legacies. The thesis is evident in the introduction: "Violent Utopia explores the juxtaposition of violence and Black freedom and progress in a direct assessment of the paradoxical circumstances of Blackness in the United States" (p. 15).
