About Dr Jacob Pearce

Dr Jacob Pearce is a Senior Research Fellow in the Assessment and Psychometric Research Division of ACER, and an Honorary Associate in History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Melbourne. Dr Pearce has a versatile range of interests and expertise―assessment quality, assessment practice, medical education, educational measurement, admissions testing, physics, cosmology, and the history and philosophy of science.
 
Since joining ACER in 2009, Dr Pearce has worked on national and international projects in physics, medicine, engineering, mathematics, science, problem solving, logical reasoning, higher education and generic skills. In the Assessment and Reporting team, Dr Pearce has worked primarily as an item writer and test developer for high stakes assessments in physics, logical reasoning and problem solving. In the Tertiary Education team, Dr Pearce's work focuses on assessment quality, best practice in assessment, evaluation, measuring competencies and learning outcomes assessments. He works as an assessment consultant for several medical specialty training colleges.
 
Dr Pearce has a solid background in physics and philosophy and has a PhD from the University of Melbourne in the History and Philosophy of Science Program. His thesis was titled "Historicizing Cosmology: The Shifting Scenes of Modern Cosmological Inquiry". He also holds a Bachelor of Science in Physics and a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) both from the University of Melbourne.
